An AI answer card connects to three supporting source cards.

Two experiences for exploring a question

AI Overviews provide summaries for some searches. AI Mode supports deeper exploration, reasoning and comparisons. Google says the two may use different models and techniques, so their answers and supporting links can differ.

See Google’s website-owner guidance for the platform’s explanation. Do not assume a link observed in one experience will appear in the other.

Consider what the visitor still needs

Someone comparing storage options might use an AI answer to identify useful questions. They still need a provider’s actual dimensions, access conditions, prices and enquiry process before making a decision.

That is an illustrative journey rather than a prediction of a generated response. Review the information your business can supply accurately instead of trying to write the exact answer you hope a system will produce.

Eligibility is not guaranteed selection

Google’s guidance says existing SEO fundamentals apply, with no special AI file or schema required for these features. Meeting the requirements does not guarantee inclusion.

Be specific when reviewing a proposal. Ask which page problem it fixes and what evidence will be used to assess the result. “Guaranteed AI placement” is not a substitute for that explanation.

Record observations with context

  1. Keep the exact question and date.
  2. Note which search experience you observed.
  3. Record the cited page, not just the business name.
  4. Open the source and compare it with the statement.
  5. Avoid generalising from one screenshot.

A mention, a citation and a visit are different observations. Keep those distinctions visible in reporting.

Continue useful website maintenance

Make service information clear, keep facts current and ensure visitors can complete the next step. Check the page on a phone and repair broken references.

Use the useful-content guide for an editorial review, and the AI Overviews introduction for the earlier feature. These improvements remain useful even if a page is never cited in an AI answer.
