How do they fit into search?
An ordinary search listing introduces a particular page. An AI Overview presents a summary and supporting links. Google does not show an AI Overview for every query, and its appearance can change.
Think of a customer researching how to choose curtains for a sunny apartment. A summary might help them understand the factors involved. They may still need a supplier’s page to compare fabrics, see measurements or arrange a consultation. This is an illustrative journey, not a prediction of a particular search result.
For a website owner, the useful question is what information the visitor still needs when they arrive.
Can any website be included?
Google says a supporting page must be indexed and eligible for a search snippet. Meeting those conditions does not guarantee inclusion. Its guidance for website owners says that existing SEO fundamentals apply and no special AI file or schema is required for these features.
Be cautious with offers that present a particular file, paragraph template or paid package as a guaranteed route into an AI Overview. Ask what the work changes on your website and how its usefulness will be assessed.
A practical example for a Malaysian business
Imagine a curtain shop in Subang Jaya whose customers repeatedly ask whether a fabric will reduce afternoon glare. A thin page saying “premium curtains, best quality” gives them little to work with.
A more useful page could explain the available fabric options, how samples can be viewed, what measurements are needed and which installation areas the shop serves. Photographs and clear descriptions can help customers compare choices without guessing.
If performance claims depend on a particular fabric or test, state that limitation. Do not apply one product’s claims to the entire range. Keep consultation details and the ordering process easy to find.
What should you review first?
- Choose a real question. Start with one your team answers regularly.
- Check the existing page. Identify what a customer would still need to ask after reading it.
- Add useful detail. Include examples, conditions and information specific to your service.
- Check consistency. Compare the page with current prices, opening hours and service information elsewhere.
- Check the next step. Test the link, form or phone number a visitor is expected to use.
This review has a practical purpose even if the page never appears in an AI Overview: customers can understand the offer more easily.
How should you judge progress?
Keep a dated record of what you changed and why. Review search performance alongside enquiries, bookings or other meaningful actions. A screenshot showing your business in one generated response is an observation, not evidence of consistent visibility.
When reviewing an AI answer, record the exact question, date and cited page. Open the source to check whether it supports the statement. Avoid drawing broad conclusions from a single result.
